Note: Nearly all of the Information recorded below is taken from an old newspaper story dated in 1924 of Dr. Woods and his Royal Order of Lions when he was 47 years old. He died January 28, 1966, at the age of 88.
Affectionately known as ‘Perry’ to his family, Woods was born May 20, 1877, in Clarinda, Iowa. Being a farmer himself, Perry’s father wanted his son to follow in his footsteps, but Perry had his sights set on becoming a doctor. Going against his father’s wishes, he was obligated to finance himself through college. He graduated from Amity College (Iowa) with honors while receiving his A.B. Degree. Woods then entered medical school and graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons (Chicago). After serving his internship at St. Mary’s Hospital (Chicago), he went to Evansville, Indiana and built up an elegant practice in surgery since his surgical achievements are known throughout Indiana and neighboring states.
Dr. Woods has been interested in fraternalism from the time he was initiated into the mysteries of his first college fraternity and since that time has listed his membership with a good many other fraternal societies.
Thus his individual spirit towards doing good unto others manifested itself to the extent that he decided to build a new order with fundamental principles more nearly perfect than any in existence: hence in the year 1911 was founded the Royal Order of Lions, now destined to become the grandest of all fraternal orders. Dr. Woods also founded the International Association of Lions Clubs, a civic organization which now has clubs in over 500 cities in the United States and Canada. This organization was founded in 1916 and turned over to the delegates in convention at Dallas, Texas, in 1917.

I have been working on the real history of Lions.
I was interested in more of what happened with Dr. Woods after 1918 until his death in 1966.
Was he forced out of Lions for some reason? I know it was in the last few years his name was able to reappear in Lions history.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

Ed,
I too was intrigued by this. I did some searching of newspapers from Evansville IN from 1911 until 1970. I found that there were several references to him in relation to the Royal Order of Lions after 1920, but no mention of his connection with IALC, other than being the founder of the organization. It would seem that he decided to concentrate on his original organization once he was no longer president of the IALC. It was also mentioned in an article in the mid sixties that he was much to busy with his practice to be involved with the IALC. The ROOL had plans to develop a home for the “aged, infirm, and orphaned of the members”(Evansville Courier 08Oct1922) and had purchased property in downtown Evansville to put the headquarters of ROOL. Also, under the rules of the ROOL only “Patriotic, Protestant, Americans were considered for membership in this secret fraternity”. (Evansville Courier, 23Apr1923). Dr. W.P. Woods was still the “Supreme President” of the ROOL in May of 1923.
Thank you very much for this information.
